Emergency Medicine research is a critical aspect of my academic role at Beaumont. I am very passionate about translational clinical research and work to inspire faculty, fellows, residents, and students to join me in my quest for scientific discovery. Over the years, my main research niche has been ultrasound-guided vascular access and vascular access complications. In addition to these topics and research related to general ultrasound applications, my team has also published on a variety of other topics including COVID-19, medical education, and venous thromboembolism. With the support of the Beaumont Research Institute, I have been fortunate enough to receive several research grants, publish numerous manuscripts, and disseminate my findings in a variety of national and international forums. There are a great number of potential research projects still to be explored within the department. Projects underway this year with research potential include: implementing a longitudinal ultrasound curriculum with OUWB school of medicine, operationalization of TEE ultrasonography in emergency resuscitation, and complete digitalization of the resident ultrasound curriculum.
As of October 2020 the ultrasound department at Beaumont Royal Oak has been awarded 8 investigator initiated research awards in the past 36 months. This has helped to infuse the department with approximately 1 million dollars of available research funds.
The ultrasound department has published 15 manuscripts in the past 36 months. Ongoing research includes: vascular access and peripheral IV survival, resident ultrasound education, ultrasound in COVID-19, TEE in cardiac arrest, QI and best practices.
